The acolytes serving The Church of the Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Hilo were recently recognized for their service to the church at the annual Acolyte Service and Leadership Scholarship awards. Youth leader Gina Hara Chun and the Rev. Moki Hino praised the acolytes for their service and commitment to the church, the development of their leadership skills, as well as their participation in community service projects. Honored this year were graduates Scott Takahashi, Matthew Chun and Charlotte McPherson.

Takahashi is the son of Dennis and Christine Takahashi and is a recent graduate of Waiakea High School. He has served as an acolyte for six years. He was an active member of the Waiakea Japanese Club and Jr. ROTC when it was in existence at Waiakea High School. He will be attending the Citadel in South Carolina to pursue a career in the military.

Chun is the son of Andrew and Gina Chun and is a recent graduate of Kamehameha Hawaii. He has served as an acolyte for 10 years. He played varsity football and baseball, and will continue playing baseball while attending the University of Puget Sound in Washington state.

McPherson is the daughter of Katherine and Jacob McPherson and is a recent graduate of Hilo High School. She has served as an acolyte for four years. She is active in the local performing arts community as a production stage manager and will be attending Pace University in New York City to pursue her dream to become a Broadway stage manager.

Hino praised these three young adults for their years of service and the example they set for the other youths in the church.

He encouraged other youths to participate in the church as acolytes to help serve their community. Hino also commented the mission of the Acolyte Service and Leadership Scholarship program is to encourage youth “to make good decisions in their lives,” which will positively affect them for the rest of their lives and benefit the greater community.

He thanked the congregation for its continued support of the youth program and asked church members to continue praying for the success of the graduates.
