During the week of June 2-8, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of June 2-8, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 10; Kona, 8; South Kohala, 2; and North Kohala, 1.

So far this year, there have been 545 DUI arrests compared to 571 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6 percent.

There have been 684 major accidents so far this year compared to 618 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to 17 during the same period last year, a decrease of 58.8 percent.

To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and two, a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
