A Hilo grand jury indicted a 28-year-old Hilo man accused of injuring three people in a midnight stabbing spree May 23.
The seven-count indictment dated June 4 charges Varaha Mims with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, marijuana possession and fourth-degree property damage.
Mims is accused of stabbing 28-year-old Skylar Nelson of Pahoa and his girlfriend, 27-year-old Sarah Steinbrecher of Hilo, outside Hilo Town Tavern. Nelson was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition with a punctured aorta.
The assailant damaged a car outside the downtown Hilo watering hole before fleeing on foot toward Wainaku, police said.
A few minutes later, Mims allegedly broke into the home of his former landlord, 49-year-old Raghunatha John Giuffre and stabbed him repeatedly, as well. Giuffre made his way outside and neighbors came to Giuffre’s aid. He suffered a punctured lung and was hospitalized at Hilo Medical Center, initially in critical condition and later improved to stable condition.
Hilo District Judge Barbara Takase ordered a mental examination of Mims with a hearing set for July 8, but the indictment moves the case to Hilo Circuit Court.
Mims is being detained without bail at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
