The series debuts at 6 p.m. today with Hope Keawe and Hula Halau O Mana‘olana O Kohala at the one-of-a-kind outdoor setting of the kahua hula (platform) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hula Halau O Mana‘olana O Kohala is a school of hula serving youths and adults in North Kohala. Established in 2012 by Hope Keawe, the mission of Hula Halau O Mana`olana O Kohala is to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture by teaching children and adults of Kohala the art of hula.
Keawe was born and raised in Kohala. She has been sharing Hawaiian music professionally by performing and touring with her husband, John Keawe, since 1994.
Keawe studied hula under Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner and Kumu hula Raylene Ha‘alelea Kawaiea‘a from 1994 until her passing in March of 2012. Throughout this time, Keawe had the honor and privilege to travel nationally and internationally with Kawaiea‘a, teaching hula and sharing Hawaiian culture.
Keawe began studying with kumu hula Keala Ching of Kona in 2012.
