In celebration of National Trails Day, E Mau Na Ala Hele will sponsor a hike on Sunday on the Saddle Road Pu‘u ‘O‘o Trail, where hikers can enjoy native plant habitat, some bird watching and photography.
In celebration of National Trails Day, E Mau Na Ala Hele will sponsor a hike on Sunday on the Saddle Road Pu‘u ‘O‘o Trail, where hikers can enjoy native plant habitat, some bird watching and photography.
Conditions may be sunny and warm or rainy, foggy, and cool. Hikers should be prepared for all weather, wear sturdy footwear, bring a trail lunch and water. The trail runs through a hunting area, so please wear orange or other brightly colored clothing.
The trail passes over the 1855 and 1881 lava flows, and through several kipuka of mixed native species and older koa. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the hunter check-in station at Puu Huluhulu at the 28-mile marker along Saddle Road, at the junction of the Mauna Kea access road and Saddle Road. There are restrooms and parking there.
“We will then car pool approximately six miles to the trailhead on Saddle Road at the 22.4-mile marker, with return to the cars mid-afternoon. Distance will depend upon the interests of the hikers. We will hike out and back on the same trail. E Mau members and the public are invited to join the hike,” said spokeswoman Clare Wilson. The hike is free, but limited to the first 30 people to sign up.
