At a Court of Honor held at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin’s Sangha Hall on March 23, Boy Scout Troop 23 awarded Casey Nakatsu, 17, and Ryne Sako, 17, both Hilo High School seniors, the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Fewer than 4 percent of all scouts manage to attain the Eagle Rank.
At a Court of Honor held at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin’s Sangha Hall on March 23, Boy Scout Troop 23 awarded Casey Nakatsu, 17, and Ryne Sako, 17, both Hilo High School seniors, the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Fewer than 4 percent of all scouts manage to attain the Eagle Rank.
Nakatsu’s Eagle Scout service project consisted of installing sign poles for the Sangha Hall. In addition to serving in Troop leadership positions, Nakatsu served as Hilo High School’s Varsity soccer team Captain.
Participating in the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia was the highlight of Nakatsu’s scouting adventures. After high school graduation, Nakatsu plans to attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo and major in business administration. His parents are Owen and Susan Nakatsu of Hilo.
Sako’s Eagle Scout service project involved constructing and installing three benches at Boiling Pots and the Wailoa State Parks.
“I want to thank Argus and HPM Building Supply companies for building material donations and Dean Takabayashi of the Department of Land and Natural Resources for help with the project planning,” Sako said.
Sako plans to attend Seattle University to major in physics and subsequently go on to graduate school to become an astronomer. At Hilo High, he serves as its tennis team’s captain. He currently serves as president of Hilo Hongwanji’s Young Buddhist Association. Sako’s most memorable, enjoyable and challenging experience was the hike-camp adventure to Waimanu Valley. His parents are Warren and Janet Sako of Kurtistown.
Byron Fujimoto serves as Troop 23’s scoutmaster. Aaron Morita is the assistant scoutmaster.
