Seniors Tony Connors (Honokaa High), Charlie Belmes (Keaau), Carmen Garson-Shumway (Hilo) and Clara Sheffield (Christian Liberty Academy) were each granted $1,000 college scholarships by Big Island Road Runners in memory of the late Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph.

According to the BIRR, each were selected for their excellence in running and in the classroom.

On May 18, 77 runners and walkers gathered at Hilo’s Reeds Bay at 7:30 a.m. to honor the students. Donations were accepted and the BIIR agreed to match each dollar, with $1,400 being raised.
