Police have identified the man killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Volcano Highway (Route 11) near the 13-mile-marker in Mountain View as 69-year-old Hubert F. Silva of Pearl City, Oahu.

Police have identified the man killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Volcano Highway (Route 11) near the 13-mile-marker in Mountain View as 69-year-old Hubert F. Silva of Pearl City, Oahu.

Police say Silva was driving a 2002 Ford 4-door sedan north when a southbound 1995 Ford pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old Keaau man crossed the centerline and collided with Silva’s car.

A 64-year-old Mountain View woman who was a passenger in the Silva’s car was taken to Hilo Medical Center and confined in stable condition.

The driver of the Ford truck was also admitted in stable condition.

Passengers in the Ford truck, all men, ages 19, 20, 21 and 22, were all treated and released with minor injuries.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

Police have initiated initiated negligent homicide, negligent injury, no driver’s license and insurance investigations against the driver of the pickup.

Silva’s death is the 6th official traffic fatality this year on the Big Island compared to 13 at this time last year, and an autopsy has been ordered.
