Takeshi “Blackie” Matsunaka, 94, of Papaikou died April 23 at a private care home in Hilo. Born in Papaikou, he was a retired factory supervisor for the former Hilo Coast Processing Company. John Francis Gallipeau, Sr., 86, of Honomu died April 28 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Newport, R.I., he served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during World War II. He also served aboard the USS William C. Cole after World War II and the USS Bradford during the Korean conflict. He also served with the Military Advisory Assistance Group in Vietnam and later joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in Europe. He was also a member and a Eucharistic minister at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Honomu. Visitation from 5-9 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Honomu. Prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8-10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.; burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.
