The 2014 Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarship winners recently were announced.

This year, because of the outpouring of community support, this organization was able to double the scholarship awards to four $1,000 grants to be given to senior athletes accepted to college and who best exemplified excellence in running, academics, volunteerism, need and overall citzenship.

Applicants were also required to write an essay about “How running has influenced your life.”

Winners are: Charlie Belmes, Keaau High School; Anthony Connors, Honokaa High School; Clara Sheffield, Christian Liberty Academy; and Carmen Garson-Shumway of Hilo High School.

The students will receive their awards Sunday, May 18, at the Scholarship Fun Run at Reeds Bay Park.

The run begins at 7:30 a.m. Coordinators invite the community to participate. The entry fee will be a donation to the 2015 scholarship fund.
