The Japan Club at Hilo High School is organizing a Ken U Dama — Kendama Contest to promote Japanese culture on the Big Island.

The Japan Club at Hilo High School is organizing a Ken U Dama — Kendama Contest to promote Japanese culture on the Big Island.

All K-12 students are invited to this contest Sunday in front of the auditorium at the school at 556 Waianuenue Ave. in Hilo.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the contest will wind up at 12:30 p.m.

The prizes for winners are jumbo kendamas, regular size kendamas and gift certificates for various local stores.

Participants need to bring their registration forms signed by parents/guardians with the registration fee of $3 per student (cash only) to the event. Registration forms are available at various Hilo-area schools, or by emailing hilohighkendama@gmail.com.

The money raised will be used to offset club travel costs to Japan next school year.

This event is sponsored by Nori’s Saimin &Snacks, Asami’s Kitchen, Kozmic Cones, Blane’s Drive Inn and Starbucks-Hilo.
