During the week of April 21-27, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 6; Kona, 5; South Kohala, 3; and Puna, 1.
So far this year, there have been 422 DUI arrests compared to 432 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.3 percent.
There have been 525 major accidents so far this year compared to 438 during the same period last year, an increase of 19.9 percent.
So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities compared to 12 during the same period last year, a decrease of 66.7 percent.
To date, three of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs, another to alcohol and the third, a combination of both, according to police.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
