Daily music and talk-story events this week in downtown Hilo are featuring the music and literature of Hawaii. Everyone is invited to the free programs being presented in tribute to the 51st annual Merrie Monarch Festival at Basically Books at 160 Kamehameha Ave.

Since Saturday, the series has hosted Bert Naihe, Helen Wong Smith, Ben Kaili, Weldon Kekauoha and Friends, Kawika Alfiche and Duncan O’Brian.

Today at 11:30 a.m. historian Boyd Bond will talk about “The Development of Hawaiian Mele from Ancient Chant to Modern Song.” At 2 p.m. today, Emmy-winning videographer Mick Kalber will show highlights of his new DVD, “Volcanoscapes… Dancing with the Goddess.”

Thursday at 12:30 p.m., Robert Cazimero will sign his book, “Men of Hula,” and his “Hula2” CD. At 2 p.m., Natalie Ai Kamau will present her new CD, “Eia.”

Friday at 9:30 a.m., Rob Iopa will read from his new children’s book, “A‘ama Nui,” a tale celebrating Keaukaha’s history and lore, as well as architectural creativity. At 11:30 a.m., Cyril Pahinui will celebrate his new CD, “Kani Pu Kolu,” and at 1:30 p.m., Sean Na‘auao will share music from his new CD, “Na‘auao.”

On Saturday, the final day of the festival, Waipuna will share music in celebration of Hawaii at 9:30 a.m., and Kuana Torres Kahele will share his new CD, “Hawai‘i Keawe,” celebrating his home island of Hawaii, at 2:30 p.m.
