A former Hilo woman has been sentenced in Oregon to life imprisonment for the murder of her 4-year-old son in a homeless shelter.

A Washington County Circuit Court Judge handed down the sentence Friday to 25-year-old Jessica Analani Dutro, according to the Oregonian newspaper.

Dutro will have to serve at least 25 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Dutro’s 24-year-old boyfriend, Brian Canady, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the slaying of Zachary Dutro-Boggess in a Tigard homeless shelter.

According to prosecutors, Dutro and Canady committed a deadly assault on the boy, including kicking him in the stomach, and failed to act as his health deteriorated. The couple allegedly sought help only when the boy could no longer be saved.

The child was taken to a Portland hospital on Aug. 14, 2012, the day after he turned four. He was removed from life support two days later.
