The Hui Ho‘okupono (Men against Violence) sixth annual ‘Ohana Fun Day drew more than 150 participants to the event hosted at Clem Akina Park in Hilo.

The Hui, co-chaired by Lion Roxanne Aburamen and Lion Glen “Shige” Shigehara, both from the Akaka Falls Lions Club, is a subcommittee of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Family Violence Interagency Committee. It focuses on addressing family violence — child abuse and neglect, intimate partner violence and elder abuse.

‘Ohana Fun Day was sponsored by the Mayor’s Office, Councilman Dennis “Fresh” Onishi, the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Office of Housing and Community Development, Parks &Recreation, the police and fire departments.

Other agencies and individuals participating were Akaka Falls Lions Club, Hospice of Hilo, Hui Ho‘omalu, University of Hawaii at Hilo Volcano Studies, Neighborhood Place of Puna, the Salvation Army Family Intervention Services, Big Island Church of Christ, Catholic Charities Hawaii, Boy Scouts of America, Evelyn Lee, Peter Sur, the Men of Pa‘a, Aaron Miyasato, Suisan Company, KTA Super Stores, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Hopaco, RICOH-USA-a Solution Company, and Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center

There were make-it-and-take-it activities, family photos, free vision screenings on 40 participants aged preschool to adults by the Akaka Falls Lions Club, T-shirt painting with a positive message, keiki ID, displays on volcano, the fire truck and HPD’s presentation on Neighborhood Watch and safety.

In the lucky number drawing, everyone received an ‘Ohana Fun Day T-shirt donated by Onishi.

Music was presented by DJ Kalani and family.
