Dozens of Keaukaha Elementary School students got a taste of bot-building during a demonstration put on by the Waiakea and Hilo high school robotics teams April 9 at Keaukaha Elementary.
The presentation was part of the school’s Ohana Night activities.
High school students operated different types of robots they built for past competitions. Each elementary student then got a chance to assemble his own brush-bot, a mini robot made of a toothbrush head and powered by a battery.
Students tested their brush-bots in timed trials, while excited parents and family members cheered them on.
The event was organized by first-grade teacher Amber Huihui, who said it inspired the younger students to be motivated and more competitive. She also emphasized the important connection between the elementary and the high schools it feeds, Hilo and Waiakea.
The demonstration was one of several organized by the Waiakea High School Robotics Team, a winner of state and international competitions.
