During the week of April 7-13, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than the age of 21.
During the week of April 7-13, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 16 Kona, 9; Puna, 6; South Kohala, 3; and Ka‘u, 1.
So far this year, there have been 387 DUI arrests compared to 385 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.5 percent.
There have been 459 major accidents so far this year compared to 381 during the same period last year, an increase of 20.5 percent.
So far this year, there have been four official traffic fatalities compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 63.6 percent.
To date, three of those fatalities were linked to impaired driving: one to alcohol; one to drugs and one, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
