A special informational workshop on “Proper Pesticide Use and Safety” will be presented 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the conference room at Aupuni Center at 101 Pauahi St. in Hilo by the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

Derek Shigematsu, an environmental health specialist for the state Department of Agriculture Pesticide Branch, will talk about the Federal Worker Protection Standard (WPS) for agricultural workers and pesticide handlers. He will cover such topics as pesticide use and application, handling, storage and disposal. These all are major production, labor, marketing, legal and financial risks growers face.

Register for the session by Wednesday, April 16. Call Sharon Motomura at 969-8250 or email her at smotomur@hawaii.edu

Participants are asked to bring their pesticide cards to get 1.5 credits — upon approval by state agriculture officials — toward restricted use permit recertification.
