The Waiakea Pirates Athletic Club, established in 1924, will be celebrating its 90th year with a commemorative program and banquet on Saturday, May 10 at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale.

According to a spokesperson, the athletic club was organized by several community leaders to keep youngsters in the Waiakea town area occupied and “off the streets” by engaging them in a variety of sports activities. Since that time, the organization has produced many outstanding athletes and claimed a number of local league championships. Many of the participants have also become notable community leaders.

The banquet begins at 6 p.m. and will be catered by Don’s Grill. Slated on the program will be the announcement of the 2014 “Yukiwo and Tony Taniguchi Waiakea Pirate of the Year Award,” sponsored by KTA Super Stores; the 2014 “Coach of the Year” award named in honor of the late Richard Nakamura; and Youth Program awards donated by Suisan Company.

Also on the program will be recognition of the Hilo Pony All-Stars, who finished fifth in last year’s World Series.

The evening’s program will also feature many door prizes, bingo games and fancy pupus and desserts.
