Once he and the Warriors did the same with their bats, they turned it into an efficient afternoon of Big Island Interscholastic Federation baseball.
Candaroma pitched four shutout innings of one-hit ball Monday, and Kamehameha scored seven runs in the third inning en route to a 10-0 victory against the Cowboys at Walter Victor Stadium.
Candaroma turned in a clean pitching line: no walks, no strikeouts and one hit allowed with two outs in the fourth.
“I wanted to let them hit and let our defense work,” said Candaroma, who helped his cause by going 2 for 2 with two RBIs. “I treat every team the same.”
However, the junior left-hander said Kamehameha (4-1-1 Division II) wasn’t as patient at the plate, perhaps because it took Kohala (3-4) lightly.
“First couple of innings, everyone was going after the ball,” he said. “When we worked late in counts, we started getting our hits.”
Leadoff hitter Chay Toson started the rally in the third with a single, and he ended it with a run-scoring triple to right field. In between, the Warriors coaxed three walks and took advantage of two errors. Alika Young ripped an RBI double and Daylen Calicdan singled with the bases loaded to bring in a run.
Toson and Micah Carter each finished with two RBIs, and Malu Peralta struck out two in the fifth, ending the game because of the BIIF’s 10-run rule.
Kohala starter Austin Salvador-Racoma pitched 2 1/3 innings and took the loss, though only two of the seven runs he allowed were earned. Kohala made five errors.
“That was the story; couldn’t throw strikes, a few errors,” Cowboys coach Pono Nakamura said. “A long day.”
Kohala had a chance to score in the fourth when Tate Fernandez singled to center, but Toson threw out Willy Perez at the plate.
The Cowboys sit in fourth place in Division II, and their game next week against Honokaa (2-4) will loom large in determining the fourth participant in the the playoffs.
“Still can do,” Nakamura said.
