Lucille Maria “Pi‘ilani” Aki, 59, died March 29 at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was an educational assistant at Hilo High School, a May Day coordinator with the CSAP Program, assistant manager at Kinney Shoes, an educational assistant at Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School, and worked at SASA and was a vice principal and PCNC coordinator. Suzanne Ely Byrne, 81, of Hilo died March 31 at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Cambridge, Mass. she was a retired teacher, a member of the Friends of the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, and was active in the Friends of Hilo Library and the Literacy Program. No services. Kwanji Fukuyama, 90, died March 23 at Kohala Hospital. Born in Kohala, he was a retired electrician from the Hawaii County Department of Water Supply, electrician for the former Kohala Sugar Mill, U.S. Army Company K 442nd Regimental Combat Team World War II veteran, and member of Kalahikiola Congregational Church, past member and officer of the Kohala Trollers, and past member of the Kawaihae Trolling Club and Kohala Young Farmers. James Toshiyuki Minato, 92, died March 14 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired director from the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Workers’ Compensation Division, U.S. Army World War II Veteran, former member of the Hawaii Army National Guard, also served with the U.S. Navy Seabees, and retired as a captain from the Hawaii Air National Guard, and was a member of the Church of World Messianity. Born in Honokaa, he was an irrigation manager for South Kohala Water Corp., former golf course superintendent for Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, served in the U.S. Air Force, and member of Hamakua Jodo Mission, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Big Island Golf Course Superintendents Association, and Honokaa Qi Gong.
