Lucille Maria “Pi‘ilani” Aki, 59, died March 29 at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was an educational assistant at Hilo High School, a May Day coordinator with the CSAP Program, assistant manager at Kinney Shoes, an educational assistant at Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School, and worked at SASA and was a vice principal and PCNC coordinator. A special thanks to Pohai Malama for the wonderful care they provided. No services. Survived by daughter, Corinne Inada-Aki of Hilo; brothers, Ernest Kahili of Hilo and Ronald “Kehaulani” (Kathy) Kekoa of Maine; sisters, Eva Inada and Antoinette “Toni” (Joseph “Bully”) Kaipo, both of Hilo; hanai daughter, Karen Ikeda; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and great grand nephews. Suzanne Ely Byrne, 81, of Hilo died March 31 at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Cambridge, Mass. she was a retired teacher, a member of the Friends of the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, and was active in the Friends of Hilo Library and the Literacy Program. No services. Survived by husband, Ruckman Byrne of Hilo; daughters, Sally (Juaquin) Flores of Valdez, Alaska, and Brindan (Michael Sim) Byrne of La Jolla, Calif.; son, William (Margaret) Byrne of Greensboro, N.C.; brother, Bidwell (Diana) Ely of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Kwanji Fukuyama, 90, died March 23 at Kohala Hospital. Born in Kohala, he was a retired electrician from the Hawaii County Department of Water Supply, electrician for the former Kohala Sugar Mill, U.S. Army Company K 442nd Regimental Combat Team World War II veteran, and member of Kalahikiola Congregational Church, past member and officer of the Kohala Trollers, and past member of the Kawaihae Trolling Club and Kohala Young Farmers. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Kalahikiola Congregational Church in Kohala. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Aloha attire. No flowers. Survived by son, Peter (Arleen) Fukuyama of Kohala; daughters, Elissa (Chico) Lindsey of Waimea, Jennie Vega of Kohala, Nina (Thomas) Segovia of Waikoloa and Stella (Kyle) Steinhoff of Kohala; sister, Tomie Fukuyama of Kohala; brother, Stanley Fukuyama of Honolulu; sister-in-law, Ruby Fukuyama of Honolulu; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Juanita Pabro Hamada, 73, died March 24 at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Hawaii, she was a retired housekeeper for Holiday Inn Hotel. Private family services held. Survived by sons, Clarence (Renae) Salvador Jr. and Jayson (Deanna) Salvador of Mountain View and Anthony (Lynn) Salvador Sr. of Kaumana; daughters, Laverne (Gene) Agan and Melissa Hamada of Kauai, Daphne Salvador and Yolanda (Gilbert) Hesia of Hilo and Melissa Hamada of Maui; brother, Timoteo (Laynette) Pabro Jr. of Kauai; sisters, Corazon (Felipe) Lacaden of Kauai, Li Pabro, Patricia Pabro, Norma Delo Santos, Ana Baldado and Shirl Mae, all from Hilo; brother in-law Alvin Hamada of Oahu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Namie Kayano, 91, died at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility on March 24. Born in Kealakekua, Kona, she was a homemaker and member of the Pahala Hongwanji Mission Kyodan and Buddhist Women’s Association. Friends may call Dodo Mortuary chapel from 9-10 a.m. Friday. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Private family committal services at a later time. Casual attire. No flowers. Albert Harumi Matsuda, 79, died March 28 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pahoa, he was a retired Hawaii State Department of Education teacher. Private services held. No koden. No flowers. Survived by wife, Lillian Matsuda of Hilo; daughter, Leanne (Dave) Niino of Mililani, Oahu; sister, Dorothy Kansako of Honomu; sister-in-law, Ellen Matsuda of Cypress, Calif.; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. James Toshiyuki Minato, 92, died March 14 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired director from the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Workers’ Compensation Division, U.S. Army World War II Veteran, former member of the Hawaii Army National Guard, also served with the U.S. Navy Seabees, and retired as a captain from the Hawaii Air National Guard, and was a member of the Church of World Messianity. Private services held. No koden. No flowers. Survived by son, Fredrick Minato of Aiea, Oahu; daughter, Carol (Ronald) Kashimoto of Honolulu; step-daughter, Rose Marie (Harold Matsunaga) Kurita of Lihue, Kauai; sisters, Teruko Okumura and Karen Yamada, both of California; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews. Milton “Naka” Mitsuo Nakagawa, 63, died March 18 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Honokaa, he was an irrigation manager for South Kohala Water Corp., former golf course superintendent for Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, served in the U.S. Air Force, and member of Hamakua Jodo Mission, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Big Island Golf Course Superintendents Association, and Honokaa Qi Gong. Visitation from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Casual attire.
