Fine art will be featured in a fundraising auction at Saturday’s ninth-annual Laupahoehoe Music and Cultural Festival.
The silent auction, sponsored by Hui Kako‘o O Laupahoehoe, a nonprofit organization, will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School.
Wes Bogner’s four-by-five-foot acrylic-on-board painting, valued at $3,500, is an actual-size interpretation of an unusual extant petroglyph, “Ki’i Pohaku O Ka’u #61,” found at Kahilipali, Ka‘u.
Just what it represents is lost to time; although, some see it as a symbolic footprint similar to those revered in Asia as tangible evidence of the Buddha. Bogner’s scholarly research on petroglyphs helped put his fine art into the Hawaii State Art Collection.
Holly Young, a noted sculptress from the North Hawaii community, donated a 12-inch bronze sculpture titled “Dreaming.”
Her charming work shows a boy with his dog. Mounted on a mango base, it is valued at $2,800.
Other items up for auction include 12 yards of cinder, delivered; a ping pong table; furniture; homemade pies; swimming as well as horseback riding lessons; a 400-pound steer; power tools; and much more.
