During the week of March 24-30 Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of March 24-30 Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 7; Kona, 4; Puna, 3; and Ka‘u, 1.

So far this year, there have been 327 DUI arrests compared to 334 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.1 percent.

There have been 409 major accidents so far this year compared to 330 during the same period last year, an increase of 23.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been three official traffic fatalities compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 72.7 percent.

To date, two of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs and another to a combination of drugs and alcohol, police said.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
