Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate Nainoa Calip shot a 2-under 70 on Thursday and the University of Hawaii opened a 15-stroke lead during first-round play at Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Oahu.

Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate Nainoa Calip shot a 2-under 70 on Thursday and the University of Hawaii opened a 15-stroke lead during first-round play at Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Oahu.

Calip was in second place, three shots behind teammate Ryan Kuroiwa.

UH (6-under 282) is the only Division I team in the six-school field. BYU-Hawaii was in second place.

Sand volleyball

The Rainbow Wahine swept a pair of contests, beating No. 6 UCLA and San Francisco in Larkspur, Calif.

UH (9-2) won in straight sets in eight of their 10 matches.

Swimming and diving

Distance swimmer Victor Goicoechea and diver Amund Gismervik failed to qualify for the finals at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in Austin, Texas.

Gismervik was 24th in the 1-meter preliminaries, while Goicoechea finished 45th in the 500-yard freestyle trials.
