Two county helicopters were among the eight Fire Department units that rescued two kayakers in distress Wednesday morning off the North Kohala coast.

According to a written Fire Department release, an undercurrent likely pulled the kayak with two aboard farther away from the shore.

One of the helicopters responding to the 10:59 a.m. alarm spotted the kayak about 2-3 miles offshore of the 12-mile marker of Akoni Pule Highway. The copter hovered over the craft until the second chopper arrived, rescued the two individuals and retrieved the kayak.

Neither kayaker required medical attention.
