Six Cadets of the Hawaii National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy were sworn in to the Cadet Council earlier this month by County Councilman Greggor Ilagan.
These representatives will perform their duties by leading fellow cadets in debates, resolving issues, decision-making, planning activities on and off campus and, service to community and becoming productive citizens with the assistance of their Cadet Council advisor and teacher Ken Uyeda and Deputy Director Col. Gary Thomas.
The HINGYCA is a five-and-a-half-month residential program for youth 16-18 years of age at risk of dropping out of high school. It teaches structure, self-discipline and cadets earn a community school diploma, which can be used toward higher education, military and/or the workforce.
The next Hawaii Youth Challenge class will begin in July at the new HYC facility located at the Keaukaha Military Reservation (Hilo Airport).
