Recycle Hawaii announces its ninth annual Art of Recycling School Competition (ARSC) will be held during the month of April.
“The program aims to increase environmental awareness and encourage recycling and sustainable practices in our community,” said Recycle Hawaii Executive Director Paul Buklarewicz.
This popular event is open to Hawaii island students in grades K-12 who create original artwork from recycled or reusable materials to be judged and then exhibited.
Teachers need to register by March 25. An ARSC Entry &Waiver Form must accompany each selected art piece to the appropriate district site.
For East Hawaii, from Papaikou through Hilo to Naalehu, bring entries 3-4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, to Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. For West Hawaii, from Kailua-Kona to Oceanview, bring entries 3-4 p.m. Thursday, April 10, to Kona International Market in Kailua-Kona. For North Hawaii, from Laupahoehoe to Waikoloa, bring entries 2:30-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, to Waimea Art Council Firehouse Gallery in Waimea.
Artwork should focus on the theme of “reduce, reuse, recycle, island sustainability, preserving/protecting Hawaii’s natural environment or zero waste.” Entries are judged on originality, theme, personal expression, execution of materials and artistic merit. Outstanding entries at elementary, middle and high school levels receive prize certificates. Outstanding class/schools receive cash prizes. Reception/awards ceremony and art exhibit are open to the public.
