During the week of March 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 30 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of March 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 30 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; Puna, 7; South Hilo, 6; and South Kohala, 4.

So far this year, there have been 254 DUI arrests compared to 234 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.5 percent.

There have been 316 major accidents so far this year compared to 256 during the same period last year, an increase of 23.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been three official traffic fatalities compared to nine during the same period last year, a decrease of 66.7 percent.

To date, two of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: one to drugs; the other, a combination of drugs and alcohol, according to police.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
