Up and down its volleyball lineup, the University of Hawaii’s hitting numbers were ultra-efficient. The Rainbow Warriors needed all comers to take down No. 3 UCLA for the second consecutive night.
Junior opposite hitter Brook Sedore led the way with a match-high 22 kills Saturday night, and UH rallied to beat the Bruins 22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 15-11 at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The 11th-ranked Rainbow Warriors (11-6, 9-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) swept the league season series against the Bruins (13-5, 10-4) for the first time since 2006 by hitting .404.
Sedore attacked at a .400 clip, combining for 43 kills in two nights. Sophomore outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic (.370) added 13 kills and three aces, including one to set up match point in the the fifth set. Sedore ended matters with a kill.
Junior middle blocker Taylor Averill had 10 kills on .615 hitting while fellow middle Nick West (.364) tied his career-high with eight blocks along with six kills.
Robart Page compiled 16 kills for UCLA, which hit. 246.
Baseball
Pitcher Aaron Brown backed himself with a home run and three hits, and Brandon Caruso and Manny Jefferson each finished with two hits and collected RBI singles during Pepperdine’s fourth-run second inning as the Waves beat Hawaii 7-3 to split the four-game series in Honolulu.
Making his first start of the season, Eric Gleese (0-3) lasted only three innings as UH (6-6) fell back to .500.
Juliene Jones had two hits and two RBI for the Rainbow Warriors, and Marcus Doi came through with a a pinch-hit RBI single.
Brown (2-0) struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings for Pepperdine (8-3).
