Police are investigating a Valentine’s Day robbery at a county beach in Keaukaha.

On Feb. 14 at 11:33 a.m., officers responded to a report of a robbery two hours earlier in the parking lot of Carlsmith Beach Park.

A 58-year-old Hilo man was reportedly loading his car after a swim, when a young man approached from behind and asked for help.

When the victim turned around, the suspect punched him, grabbed his wallet and ran away. He may have gotten into a small white sedan and headed toward Hilo.

The suspect is described as a local male in his 20s, slim with a tan complexion, short black hair and unshaven. He was wearing dark surf shorts.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who knows the identity of the suspect is asked to call the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.

Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
