The Book of Golden Deeds recognizes an unsung hero in the community whose dedication and service through volunteerism and personal sacrifice is worthy of special recognition.

Lucille Chung’s commitment to community service is evidenced by the depth and breadth of her experiences. At the age of 3 she accompanied her mother, the Laupahoehoe post mistress, to work. She held significant positions with the Laupahoehoe Sugar Company and the Hawaii County Police Department at the Station. She was coaxed out of retirement by the Queen Lili1uokalani Children’s Center as a Community Building Facilitator.

Throughout the years, her commitment to community work is evidenced in the depth and breadth of her experiences. Some of her activities include volunteering in various community entities such as the North Hilo Community Council, the Hawaiian Civic Club of Laupahoehoe, School as a DOE school and now a charter school. She engaged government and private entities to bring 24-hour fire service to the North Hilo District; worked for equity in funding for the schools; kept the Laupahoehoe School/Community Library open; worked for road improvements for residents in the North Hilo District, worked to install the Laupahoehoe Boat Ramp; and kept Laupahoehoe Police Station open.
