The center is delighted Dr. McKenna returned to Hawaii and brought her expertise to the Hamakua Health Center and the families on the Hamakua Coast.

The Hawaii Saddle Club is proud to offer $500 and $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to attend an accredited college or university.
These scholarships also will be offered to students currently enrolled at a college or university.
Applicants are asked to read the criteria and eligibility of the scholarships, complete application with all requirements and submit their applications by April 1.

Braddah Smitty conceived the thought of the Laupahoehoe Music Festival while sitting on the balcony of his home overlooking Laupahoehoe Point.
In Fall 2005, a small group of volunteers met with Braddah Smitty to bring his vision to fruition.
Malama Hawaii Nei was created to pursue his vision to “give back” to the community of Laupahoehoe, where he had moved to and fell in love with.
In February 2006, the first festival was hosted at Laupahoehoe Point with resounding success and it has been hosted each year since on the Saturday of the Presidents’ Day weekend in February.
Since 2006, Malama Hawaii Nei has awarded post high school scholarships to 38 graduates of Laupahoehoe School to the tune of $29,300.
Each year since 2006, it became evident so many other events around the island were being hosted that same Saturday, thereby competing for attendance.
Braddah Smitty left his earthly existence June 9, 2012. Malama Hawaii Nei is committed to perpetuate his vision, but decided to move the now named Braddah Smitty’s Laupahoehoe Music Festival to 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Laupahoehoe Point to see if this later date will be a clearer date to boost attendance.
The group is working closely with Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School to promote the event.
The ticket price will remain at $12 presale and $15 at the gate. Children 10 and younger will be admitted free.
In addition to the post high school scholarships mentioned earlier, proceeds from the event have also helped the senior citizens at Laupshoehoe obtain fans for their meeting place at the gym, and bicycles for the Toys for Tots program and other community programs.
Hui Kako‘o O Laupahoehoe, the nonprofit organization that supports Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School, also will host a silent auction at the event.
Last year, they raised $7,000 via the silent auction.
There will also be food and craft and informational booths.

Sign up now for free Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) in Waimea — a 27-hour course presented on four consecutive Saturdays, March 22-April 12.
It is sponsored by Hawaii County Civil Defense in partnership with other public first responders.
“It’s not ‘if’ but ‘when’ the next big event occurs,” said CERT organizers.
CERT provides residents and businesses with the basics about how to properly prepare and respond to an emergency at home, work or in the community.
The course includes basic disaster response, fire safety, light rescue, team and responder coordination and basic medical care.
Using skills and knowledge learned in the classroom reinforced by practical application through role playing and exercises, CERT provides fundamental skills and understanding to make meaningful decisions to serve family and community and support first responders.

The blessing of the Palili ‘O Kohala Natural Farming Learning Lab will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Ho‘ea Farms, 55-370 Ho‘ea Road in Hawi.
The daylong program will include a Kohala-grown lunch, workshops and demonstrations, a blessing of new Natural Farming pig and chicken house, and a live performance by Ki Ho‘alu slack-key guitar master Cyril Pahinui.
The cost is $15, which includes lunch. Children 10 and younger are free.
