Russell Oda, Al Garson and Sheldon Simeon will be the recipients of Hilo High School Foundation Distinguished Service Awards during the foundation’s fourth annual recognition dinner Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Sangha Hall.
Russell Oda, Al Garson and Sheldon Simeon will be the recipients of Hilo High School Foundation Distinguished Service Awards during the foundation’s fourth annual recognition dinner Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Sangha Hall.
The awards will be presented by foundation President Barry Taniguchi and Vice President Allan Ikawa.

Russell Oda, a 1948 graduate of Hilo High School, became a prominent architect in Hawaii. Oda designed many of the most famous buildings in Hilo, including the Wailoa Center and the Hilo Judiciary Building.
Al Garson was principal at Hilo High from 1979-86.
Sheldon Simeon is a 2000 graduate and quickly rose to international fame as a finalist in Bravo Channel’s TV show, “Top Chef-Seattle.”
Tickets are $50 and include a special dinner catered by Don’s Grill, with a special dish by Simeon. Ticket buyers are encouraged to organize a mini-reunion with their class. Special tables for group sponsors are available: Platinum $1,500, Blue $1,000, Gold $750, and Viking $500.
“This would be a great time for alums to put together a table with classmates while helping Hilo High and the foundation,” said Chu.
The Hilo High Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt foundation dedicated to enhancing the educational opportunities for students at Hilo High.
