Hawaiian Telcom is attributing Tuesday’s failure of the state’s 911 phone system to human error.
A spokeswoman for the phone company, said the failure occurred when a contractor was switching Molokai to a more advanced platform for the emergency phone system.
Molokai was the last island to be switched to the new system, which will accommodate texting as well as video, the spokeswoman said. It wasn’t clear when those features will be available.
The error caused 911 to be unavailable across the state, including from 2:55-3:30 p.m. on the Big Island.
Anyone dialing the number received a busy signal.
