After two weeks without rain, Hilo experienced a record rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Larissa Johnson, spokesperson for the National Weather Service in Honolulu, said over a 24-hour period, weather crews at the Hilo airport recorded a record maximum rainfall of 3.05 inches for Jan. 28.
The last record daily maximum rainfall occurred in 1988 for 1.39 inches.
According to a report from NWS, not only did rainfall at Hilo airport break a record for Jan. 28, but a record was also set for the lowest maximum temperature for that day, as well. The high temperature was at 70 degrees, which broke the old low maximum record of 72 set in 1979.
Marlon Verasamy, meteorologist technician at the Hilo airport weather station, said the last time it rained in Hilo was on Jan. 12. The area received one inch of rain that day.
Verasamy said residents should expect isolated showers off and on throughout the day, slowly improving as the day goes on. More showers are expected for Friday afternoon and will continue into the weekend.
