I was saddened to read about the passing of Namaste on Jan. 16. He most definitely was the star of the Panaewa Zoo.
I am also saddened that Clayton Honma, county Parks and Recreation director, has made the decision regarding a memorial service being held and said, “I don’t think so.”
I’m a substitute teacher in the Puna district, and whatever school I taught at, all the students would say “Namaste!” when I mentioned the zoo. They obviously learned from and enjoyed visiting him, as we all did.
Some closure is needed. So I was thinking about asking some friends to join me at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Namaste’s hale to take a moment to remember the lasting delight he brought to the keiki and our community.
I’ll bring a lei and a box of tissues. Plenty of room for everyone!

Thank you, Hawaii!
Due to special circumstances beyond my control, I found myself alone and without close friends and family in Hawaii during the Christmas season.
As we all know, being alone can be a challenge in itself. But being alone during the holiday season can be exceptionally difficult.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the organizations, clubs, schools, retailers, etc., who put on events throughout the Christmas season, as well as the entire year. Having somewhere to go and something to look forward to really brightened my holiday season.
Some of the wonderful events and places I attended were parades, school Christmas concerts, Puna Men’s Chorus, roller derby, events at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the Palace and Waimea theaters, Santa at the mall, farmer’s markets, VFW (Pahoa) community breakfast, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and many more.
The way I found out about all these incredible events was through the Calendar section of the Saturday Tribune-Herald. Please tell your friend about this section if they are not already aware of it.
Lastly, I would like to say a very special thank you to Mr. Randy Skaggs, music instructor at St. Joseph’s High School. Mr. Skaggs just put on his 20th Christmas concert!

The real problem
I, having crossed the George Washington Bridge numerous times in the past, always thought the responsibility for its operation is (or was) the Port Authority. I have seen nothing to that fact. Where were they during the closure?
Instead, I have only been subjected to placing the blame on New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie by the Tribune-Herald with their downright stupid almost daily cartoon castigation of Gov. Christie. Let’s at least be fair in pointing the finger of blame!
