HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team returns to the Stan Sheriff Center for a two-game homestand today and Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine (8-7 overall, 2-1 Big West Conference) will face Cal Davis (8-9, 3-1) at 7 p.m. today and Cal Irvine (8-9, 1-2) at 5 p.m. Saturday. Today’s game will be televised live statewide on OCSports.
UH is coming off a 74-61 road victory at Cal Riverside, led by Shawna-Lei Kuehu’s career-high 22 points, to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Kuehu upped her per-game averages to 10.1 points and 4.3 rebounds, and she increased her team-leading block total to 16.
Kamilah Jackson added 20 points and 14 rebounds, and leads the team with 16.3 ppg and 10.4 rpg.
Ashleigh Karaitiana also averages double figures in scoring at 10.3 ppg.
Cal Davis is riding a three-game win streak, including a 69-67 overtime win against Cal State Fullerton last Saturday. Junior guard Sydnee Fipps leads the Aggies with 17.5 ppg and 6.4 rpg.
RAINBOW WARRIORS HIT ROAD AGAIN: The UH men’s basketball team, meanwhile, is back on the road for conference games at Cal Davis and Cal Irvine.
The Rainbow Warriors are 12-5 overall, 1-2 in the Big West coming off last Saturday’s 100-69 rout of visiting Cal Riverside. Christian Standhardinger again led the way with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, with Brandon Spearman adding 18 points and seven rebounds and Isaac Fotu contributing 16 points and six boards.
Hawaii will be trying to break a five-game Big West regular season road losing streak dating to last year. The Rainbow Warriors lost at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 77-65, and at Cal State Northridge, 79-78, to open conference play two weeks ago.
Cal Davis (6-13, 1-3) is coming off a 69-61 victory over Cal State Fullerton last Saturday. Corey Hawkins poured in a game-high 22 points and Ryan Sypkens scored all 15 of his points in the second half to help the Aggies overcome a late eight-point deficit.
WARRIOR SPIKERS HOST Cal SAN DIEGO: The UH men’s volleyball team, fresh off last week’s upset of then-No. 4-ranked Long Beach State, returns to action with a pair of matches against Cal San Diego on Friday and Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Friday’s match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on OC Sports, and first serve is set for 5 p.m. Sunday.
The Rainbow Warriors, ranked No. 10 in this week’s AVCA Top 15 poll, are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after their stunning 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-8 comeback victory over Long Beach State last Friday night. Long Beach State had swept Hawaii, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 the night before.
Junior opposite Brook Sedore notched 24 kills and 11 digs in the five-set win.
Cal San Diego is 0-5, 0-4.
Waiakea 9, Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science 0: Hajime Hayano bagged a hat trick in Pahoa as the Warriors ended a two-game losing streak.
Michael Scott and Tyler Kerr each scored twice and Ryder Oshiro and Ty Yamamoto also had goals for Waiakea (7-4-2), which moved into third place in Division I, two points ahead of Konawaena. The Wildcats and Warriors play Saturday in Hilo.
Waiakea’s Chris Wung and Zachary Tahara both played in net against Na Naia (0-12).
