The black sand beach at Richardson Beach Park was roped off Sunday and Monday after a monk seal opted to catch a few rays at the popular bathing spot.

Lifeguards put up yellow tape around the area, but left the rest of the park open to visitors, said Jason Armstrong, public information officer for the county Department of Parks and Recreation.

“They put up signs from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with the standard wording saying that the seal is protected,” he said.
