Honolulu school under lockdown for 45 minutes
HONOLULU (AP) — A Honolulu elementary school was briefly under lockdown as police searched the area for an armed man.
Honolulu police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said police searched Friday morning for an armed man.
Kauluwela Elementary School Principal Clayton Kaninau says the lockdown lasted about 45 minutes. He said police told him it was prompted by a fight at the nearby Times Supermarket at Liliha Square, where a handgun was possibly seen.
He said all was calm while police did a sweep of the school, as students and teachers remained in their classrooms. He said police also searched a nearby park.
State Department of Education spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said officials are gathering information about what happened.
Moped, truck collide, man dies
HONOLULU (AP) — A 66-year-old man died after his moped collided with a pickup truck in Aiea.
The man was driving east on Moanalua on Thursday afternoon when his moped crossed the center median and hit the truck.
Police said the man was taken to Queen’s Medical Center, where he later died.
Soldier’s remains en route to Hawaii
HONOLULU (AP) — The remains of a Hawaii National Guard soldier killed in a plane crash in Afghanistan are headed home.
The Army said Thursday the remains of Sgt. Drew Scobie, of Kailua, are expected to arrive in Hawaii in the next several days. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Scobie was killed last Friday in Parwan Province when the MC-12 surveillance aircraft he was aboard crashed. A Wyoming Army National Guard solider was also killed in the crash.
Scobie was assigned to Headquarters and Battery, 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery in Wahiawa. He was a fire direction operator for the artillery battalion. This was his first deployment.
The 25-year-old leaves behind a pregnant wife and a son.
Congresswoman lauds Pentagon for Hawaii forum
HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa is lauding the Pentagon’s announcement Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will participate in a Hawaii forum of the 10-member Association of the Southeast Asian Nation defense ministers.
Hanabusa’s office said Hagel will host all the defense ministers for the inaugural U.S.-ASEAN forum. The three-day event is scheduled to begin April 1.
Hanabusa said in a statement it’s the first time a U.S. defense secretary hosted all defense ministers in the association in the U.S.
She said the upcoming meeting with world defense leaders will strengthen security partnerships.
The association members are Cambodia, Indonesia, Burma, Brunei, Laos, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore.
The Hawaii Democrat, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said she has been invited to participate in the forum.
