During the week of Jan. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of Jan. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, 7; South Kohala, 4; Puna and Ka‘u, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 53 DUI arrests compared to 39 during the same period last year, an increase of 35.9 percent.

There have been 41 major accidents thus far in 2014 compared to 30 during the same period last year, an increase of 36.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been two traffic fatalities compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent. To date, neither fatality was linked to impaired driving.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
