A 40-year-old Hilo man died early Tuesday morning from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Kinoole Street, 180 feet north of the intersection of Kinoole and Puainako streets.

The driver was identified as Tracy S. Pack, of a Hilo address.

After officers responded to a 1:49 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined Pack was driving a 2006 Mercedes Benz four-door sedan south on Kinoole Street when he failed to negotiate a curve, struck a chain-link fence and then crashed into a building.

Pack was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

He was pronounced dead at 4:28 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center.

Police think speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.

Pack’s death is the second traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year compared to zero at this time last year.
