During the week of Dec. 23-29, 2013, police arrested 29 motorists for drunken driving.

During the week of Dec. 23-29, 2013, police arrested 29 motorists for drunken driving.

Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, 10; Puna, 4; Ka‘u and North Hilo, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 1,343 DUI arrests compared to 1,471 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7 percent.

There have been 1,311 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,458 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10 percent.

So far this year, there have been 25 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 38 during the same period last year, a decrease of 34.2 percent.

To date, 13 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; two to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
