A gas leak that closed Kilauea Avenue near Aupuni Street this morning has been sealed.

Traffic was returned back to restricted access due to ongoing construction at about 9:20 a.m.

Construction crews had ruptured a gas line earlier this morning, causing the road to be completely closed between Mohouli and Hoku streets. The road remains restricted to one lane due to road work.

Keith Akiyama, operations supervisor with Hawaii Gas, said road crews hit the line while doing paving work. The line went to a building that’s no longer a gas customer, he said, though the line was still active.

Akiyama said the gas company received a call about the ruptured line at about 7 a.m. He said it was sealed within about 20 minutes.

Businesses in the area were closed temporarily as a result.
