Tana Hecht Basa, 73, of Hilo died Dec. 6 at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. Born in Berlin, Germany, she was a retired registered nurse, former director of nursing at the Ka‘u Hospital, employed in the Medical Records Department at the Hilo Medical Center, member of Chabad of Hawaii and was a Holocaust survivor. A graveside service will take place at noon Friday at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery #2. Casual attire. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Survived by husband, Juanito Basa of Hilo; daughters, Kari (Conley) Gali of St. George, Utah, Eliza (Randy) Talavera of Mililani; sister, Erika Mendelsohn of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren. Jane K. Nahiwa Kakelaka, 89, of Kaneohe, Oahu, died Nov. 26 at home. Born in Waimea, she was a retired senior ground hostess for Canadian International Airline. Services Monday at Hawaii Memorial Park, 45425 Kamehameha Ave., Kaneohe, Oahu. Viewing at 10:30 a.m.; service at 11:30 a.m.; burial at 2 p.m. Survived by husband, Samuel V. Kakelaka of Kaneohe, Oahu; daughter, Diane Lum of Kaneohe, Oahu; son, Samuel V. Kakelaka Jr., of Kaneohe, Oahu; sisters, Emmelina Foster, Blossom Kelii and Lydia P. Haena, each of Hilo; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great grandchildren; numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rosanna “Rosa” Mahiole Matsuyama, 62, of Keaukaha died Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama facility. Born in Hilo, she was an administrative office coordinator for Kamehameha Schools CBECE – East Hawaii. She was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward; a captain of the U.H. Hilo Teachers Handicap Mixed League Bowling Team; and a captain of the Tropical Mix HGEA Mixed Bowling Team. Visitation from 8-11 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hilo Stake Center, 1373 Kilauea Ave.; Funeral service at 11:30 a.m.; burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section. Alfredo “Fred” “Papa” Orita, 79, of Halaula, Kohala, died Dec. 2 in North Kohala. Born in North Kohala, he was a retired cook for Mauna Lani Beach Club, retired meat cutter for K. Takata Store and M. Nakahara Store, former chairperson for the Hawaii County Planning Commission, foreman for the former Kohala Sugar Company, baker at Holy’s Bakery, foreman and maintenance supervisor for Kohala Nursery, troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America West Hawaii, former member of the Hawaii Army National Guard, and member of Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may at 5 p.m. Friday at his residence in Kohala, 53-4233 Akoni Pule Hwy., for an all-night vigil. Friends may again call from 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church; funeral Mass at 10 a.m.; cremation to follow. Casual attire. Marjorie M. Murray Sumner, 83, of Hilo died Friday at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she retired from Pan American Airlines. On Oahu, a Gathering/ Celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 5, at Kailua Beach Pavilion at 11 a.m. On the Big Island, a service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the family’s Keaukaha beach house at 11 a.m. Casual attire. Survived by daughter, Bambi L. Sumner Abalos of Pearl City; sons, Reed B. Sumner and Charles Sumner of Hilo; brothers, Donald James Murray of Hilo, Robert Murray of Seattle, Wash., Melvin Murray of Austin, Texas, and Bruce Murray of Carlson, Calif.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Harry “Cris” Crispin Richard Trewman, 88, of Naalehu died Nov. 11 at his home. Born in London, England, he was a marine engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers Science &Technology.
