Troy Ira Rimel is the author, producer and director of the movie made with the local volunteer cast and crew.
The movie features “Island Fever Blues” by Jake Shimabukuro as intro music and “Only Home” by Kalei Gamiao for the ending credits.
Set along the rugged coastline of the windward side of the Big Island, “Sovereignty” is the tale of a young girl’s struggle to see her father’s dream of a free and independent Hawaii become reality. Loke learns to navigate the turbulent political waters of Washington while balancing the threat of a local legend and the burden of a personal secret.
Does Hawaii have the right to self-determination? Loke believes so and is willing to make whatever sacrifice necessary.
Tickets for premiere night are $8 and available in advance at the Palace box office and at the school in Keaau. After the December debut, “Sovereignty” will be entered into various film festivals around the country.
With more than 100 hours of filming involved, the production involved more than 50 volunteer cast and crew members, including students, teachers, parents and former students and teachers.
The students got to take part in the acting, filming, special effects, lighting, makeup, costumes and even the editing.
“Not many people know of the incredible work the students are doing this semester,” said teacher Trilvie Rombow. “We are so proud of their hard work and great accomplishments.”
