It might not quite be Carmageddon, but a planned partial closure of a portion of Kilauea Avenue next week could still provide headaches for commuters.
Earlier in the week, the county Department of Public Works announced plans to completely close the busy thoroughfare to allow a new sewer manhole to be installed. But by Friday, DPW said the road will only partially close in response to concerns from nearby merchants.
The new plan, starting Monday, is a one-lane, one-way travel only in the Puna-bound direction beginning at the Aupuni Street intersection and ending at the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge. This will be in effect 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, according to a press release from DPW.
Off-duty police officers will redirect northbound travelers to Mohouli Street.
DPW said turn lanes at the Aupuni Street/Kilauea Avenue intersection might be closed periodically. Businesses in the construction zone will remain open during normal hours. Street parking will be available to merchants in the area with the exception of a few hours to work on the mauka lanes Monday. Normal traffic patterns will be restored daily after works ends. Work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
