Wailoa Art & Cultural Center officially launches the holiday season from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday with an opening reception for its December show, “People and Their Furred and Feathered Friends Celebrate the Holidays.” Isle artists and nonprofits from the Big Island are submitting animal-themed portraits and artwork for display.
Wailoa Art & Cultural Center officially launches the holiday season from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday with an opening reception for its December show, “People and Their Furred and Feathered Friends Celebrate the Holidays.” Isle artists and nonprofits from the Big Island are submitting animal-themed portraits and artwork for display.
“We invite the public to our reception for the artists on Friday,” said Wailoa Director Codie King. “Danny the Dog will be at the celebration making balloon sculptures for all the keiki in the crowd.
“While Wailoa’s Main Gallery is celebrating our animal friends, the Fountain Gallery will celebrate the art of making paper ornaments, featuring Bill Sewell, who will have his many creations suspended from the ceiling.”
Sewell is a retired carpenter who has lived in Hawaii for 27 years. In 2006, he started making picture fames and cutting mat board for photographs, and this led to making small boxes and other things out of mat board. Soon he was collecting and using decorative papers to make paper ornaments based on the geometric polyhedron.
“Currently, Bill is exploring new ways of cutting, folding, gluing and embellishing paper,” said King.
Sewell will host a free demonstration of how he creates his ornaments during the public school holiday break on Monday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Wailoa Art & Cultural Center is an agency of the Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is free and opened to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 4:30 p.m. The center is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays.
