Aliyah Pana scored 13 points, Shalyn Guthier 12 and Amber Vaughn 10 to lead the host Vikings to a 62-40 win over rival Waiakea on Thursday in the first round of the Hilo High Preseason Girls Basketball Tournament.

In other first-round games of the three-day event at Kawananakoa Gym in Keaukaha, Iolani fought past Kamehameha 61-49 and Pahoa defeated Ka’u 56-26.

In today’s action, it’s Waiakea vs. Iolani at 3:30 p.m., Kamehameha vs. Ka’u at 5 p.m. and Pahoa vs. Hilo at 6:30 p.m.

Hilo led Waiakea 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and 26-19 at the intermission. But the Vikings outscored the Warriors 22-8 in the third period and 14-13 in the fourth to pick up the victory.

Danielle Oda led Waiakea with 10 points.

• Iolani 61, Kamehameha 49: Brooke Kaneshiro and Jade Botelho each scored 12 points to lead Iolani to a hard-fought win over defending state Division II champion Kamehameha-Hawaii.

The visiting Raiders from the rugged Interscholastic League of Honolulu led 16-11 after the first quarter and 29-26 at the half. But Iolani outpointed the Warriors from Keaau 25-13 in the third period to open up a double-digit lead before Kamehameha held a 10-8 advantage over the final eight minutes.

Senior Casey Poe led the Warriors with 20 points and junior Riana Arima had 16.

• Pahoa 56, Ka’u 26: Vanessa Castro scored 13 points, Randi Berinobis 12 and Erleen Oguma 11 to lead Pahoa past Ka’u. The Daggers led 12-8 at the end of the first period and 24-13 at the half. They then outscored the Trojans 15-6 in the third quarter and 17-7 in the final period.

Denisha Navarro led Ka’u with 10 points.
