Bad job, council
I find it odd and puzzling that our County Council would pass a measure that restricts the freedom of our farmers yet does nothing about the supposedly harmful GMO containing foods sold in our grocery stores.
I say “supposedly” because in the last 20 years, billions of humans have eaten trillions of meals with GMO corn and soy with no ill effects. But it is difficult to prove a negative.
It was good to see that the councilman from my district, Dennis Onishi, voted against this ill conceived measure. Best hopes that in the future our County Council considers and passes laws that help farmers and does not restrict their freedom.
HCC kept beautiful
Aloha, my name is Kier Kalehua Parker, and I am a student at Hawaii Community College about to graduate with my liberal arts degree this fall.
Before I leave I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to the maintenance crew whom I’ve had the pleasure of watching for the past two years.
The exceptionally hard work these men and women loyally put forth every day is called aloha aina, love for the land! Their dedication and commitment to the school campus has made my experience at HCC unforgettable.
To walk on to a beautifully manicured campus is extremely uplifting. To see the love that is poured out every day has made me appreciate and already miss HCC.
To the hard-working hands that have planted seeds, not only on the campus but in so many hearts, I will not forget you. Mahalo nui loa to you all.
Protect our island
I truly empathize with the hard work and difficulties that farmers face, but that isn’t the issue. Of course GMO crops can create profits.
The issue is that GMO crops and attending pesticides are potentially harmful within our food chain and devastating to an already fragile ecosystem.
Is the money those farmers are worried about losing really worth more than the health and future of our kids and island?
Claims that opponents of GMO are “paranoid,” “anti-science” and driven by off-island interests are false. I’ve lived here for more than 20 years.
Being concerned about what’s in your food is not paranoia, its common sense. Asking for independent studies of the effects of GMO is not “anti-science,” it’s “anti-pseudo-science.”
Twnety-six countries have banned GMO including Switzerland, Australia, Austria, China, India, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Mexico and Russia. Significant restrictions on GMOs exist in about 60 other countries. Are all those countries paranoid?
Monsanto has spent millions of dollars suppressing independent scientific studies and buying politicians to prevent any meaningful legislation from being passed.
That is why we, the people, have to take the initiative with local legislation to drive labeling laws from the bottom up.
Our voice has to be louder than that of the evil giant and their minions. We have to stand up for our keiki.
