The Oahu Cattlemen’s Association will induct 12 new members of the Paniolo Hall of Fame at the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council Annual Convention at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel at noon on Saturday.
The members of the Paniolo Hall of Fame are among the generations of Hawaii cowboys who have stood out in their contributions to cattle ranching throughout all the islands. While the cattle industry is still very much alive and well in Hawaii today, the paniolo have become a legendary and celebrated part of Hawaii’s culture.

The 12 new members are: Johnny Correia Jr., 1927-1994, Kukaiau Ranch and Jack Ramos 77 Ranch; James S. “Jimmy” Greenwell, Palani Ranch; Robert L. “Bobby” Hind Jr., 1921-1988, Puuwaawaa Ranch and McCandless Ranch; William F. Jacintho, Jacintho Ranch; Peter Kalahoolewa Kainoa Sr., 1890-1966, Kahua Ranch; William Miki Kalaniopio Sr., 1926-1991, Hana Ranch; Frank Aola Ke Sr., 1925-1981, Hawaiian Ranch; George R. “Keoki” Kealoha Sr., 1928-2008, Kukaiau Ranch; Paul H. Kealoha, 1927-2003, Kukaiau Ranch; Francis Napua Poouahi, Kaupo Ranch; Walter “Wala” Stevens, 1931-1994, Parker Ranch, and Matsuichi Yamaguchi, 1895-1936, Parker Ranch.
The program was initiated by the Oahu Cattlemen’s Association in 1999 to recognize yesterday’s and today’s paniolo statewide who have contributed to keeping Hawaii’s paniolo heritage alive, and to honor those who made the paniolo culture legendary.
Now in its 14th year, including the 2013 inductees, there are 128 members, both living and deceased, in the Paniolo Hall of Fame. All of the islands are represented by its members. All were selected through a nomination process. The Oahu Cattlemen’s Association mails out the criteria and nomination forms annually. Anyone may request and submit a nomination form.
The Paniolo Hall of Fame presently consists of photo portraits, short biographies and oral history interviews.
The portrait exhibit has been on display at Honolulu Hale (City Hall), at the Annual Statewide Paniolo Festival, at the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council annual meeting, at Parker Ranch Museum, the Hawaii State Library and numerous events and venues on all the islands. It continues to circulate to various locations statewide and may be requested by contacting OCA.
